MAXINE
"When Hallmark launched Shoebox in 1986, no body knew that the crabby character gracing the covers of a few Shoebox cards would become a celebrity. But it didn't take long to see that Maxine's irreverent quips about aging, the workplace, retirement, political correctness and of course sex (or the lack of it) had struck a chord."
"Since then, Americans have purchased more than 220 million greeting cards, and Maxine is still the first and only greeting card character to move from the card aisle into popular culture."
(and now...to the internet..I might add)
"Perpetually one of Hallmark's top-performing characters, today Maxine has her own books, comic strip, calendars and website. Her likeness-and attitude-have also appeared on everything from t-shirts to paper towels."
Maxine was created by John Wagner. He was inspired by his mother, his maiden aunts and his grandmother....who paid for his art lessons.
"Cartoonists are sensitive to the isanities of the world", he says. "We try to humanize them. If Maxine can get a laugh out of someone who feels lonely or someone who is getting older and hates the thought of another birthday...or...if she can make someone chuckle about a stressful relationship, I'm happy. Putting a smile on peoples' faces is what it's all about."

Are they over yet?
Ok, I admit it, I am not huge on the Summer Olympics.
I prefer the Winter Olympics.
I do, however, congratulate our athletes.
I am proud of them.
I found the following...and I cannot imagine WHY this guy was not over in China. If the Chinese can
have 14 year olds compete...why can't we have THIS guy?
Roy Kelton Orbison
April 23, 1936 - December 6, 1988
As with Elvis, it does not seem that Roy Orbison has gone from us. His one-of-a-kind, beautiful and haunting tenor voice lives on in our memories through his songs and music. Roy Orbison had his very own unique style...one can recognize an "Orbison" song before his voice is heard.
I am from the same part of Texas as was Roy. In fact, Roy was from Wink, Texas, where my parents met and where I would attend some Saturday night dances and the annual "Rattlesnake Round-up" at the VFW with my grandpa!
My first memories of Roy Orbison was when we were kids. He, a teenager, with his "Wink Westerners" band, and I, just a little gal in the third grade. Roy and his band would play street dances around the Permian Basin and they also appeared on a local TV show on Saturday afternoons, featuring the country-western music of local entertainers.
One Saturday, my mother watched the program with me.
We argued through the entire show about Roy Orbison.
I thought he was wonderful...she thought something was wrong with him. You see...and maybe you noticed, Roy didn't open his mouth very much as he sang...not even when he hit those high notes! I told her he would be a star...she laughed!
Wellllllllllll...years later, as I was playing, for the umpteenth time in a row, "ONLY THE LONELY" on my
"hi-fi", Mom stopped by my room. She told me she had heard this song on the radio and just LOVED it. She went on about the guy's beautiful voice...etc...me? I just sat there and smiled...til I couldn't stand it any longer..and just HAD to tell her WHO it was! I took such glee in telling her it was that redheaded, freckle-faced boy who barely opened his mouth...on that Saturday TV show in Odessa!
She "thudded". I loved it!
Roy Orbison, remains one of my most favorite singers and, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest singers of our time. When we lost him in 1988, I am not embarassed to say that I wept. The world lost a great talent and for me, he was a link to my childhood days and a part of some of my sweetest memories.
I have included links to some of his best songs and to his museum in Wink, Texas. The museum, while I would love to go there, is sad. He deserves a more grand display of his life and music. Wink, these days, is all but a Texas ghost town.
Even so, it hosts some very special memories for this Texas gal...and midst the caliche, sand and tumbleweeds, the faint smell of oil and jackrabbits scampering across the open range, there is a faint sound in the west Texas wind... Roy Orbison singing...

I looked at the above link...and...some of it could still work for us.
Some of it...NEVER worked for me...LOL
As we women know...we are not all about makeup, clothes and such, we are about EVERYTHING...which I think is why God blessed US as the childbearers and, for the most part, their primary care givers. This is a beautiful site and one that women can relate to.

PUTER PROBLEMS?
The above is regarding an impending virus. If you read all the way through it, SNOPES doesn't seem to confirm OR dispute the
information that is being passed around. CONFUSING!
So, as always, I advice is to NEVER open anything from anyone you DO NOT KNOW or that looks....weird...strange...not quite right or...that you have ANY doubt at all about.
It's easier to apologize to a friend than to buy a new puter!

In case you haven't noticed, we are fast approaching the end of August...and I think time flies by faster for us Geezers than for anyone else, so we have to try to stay a step ahead. It won't be long before there is a nip in the air....trees will begin losing their leaves...and it will be FALL....and FLU SEASON....
(BOTH sites say...GET THE SHOTS!)
This may seem an odd place to put this link....and NOOOO it has nothing to do with what MCCain's opponent says will replace drilling for our own oil. I placed it here because it could save your life or that of a loved one.
Please watch it...then go out and check the manufactured date on your tires!!!!
I have received a request from SOFTY1233 to also include recipe's and sites that feature low carb, low fat meals. The above links feature some great recipes that are supposed to be very healthy and they look good, too!!

For those who may be struggline with grief.
"I hope it helps to remember we are never closer to God than when we grieve. Faith is tested in suffering, for that is when we seek the hope we most need. That is when we awaken to the greatest hope there is, that is when we look beyond our lives to the hour God will wipe every tear...."

There comes a point in our lives that we realize...
who matters...
who never did...
and who always will...
So, don't worry about people from your past,
there's a reason they didn't make it into your future.
Be kinder than necessay because everyone you meet...
is fighting some kind of battle.
HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEK!
